15 Things to do in Bangkok

Bangkok is a city of almost nine million inhabitants, and to speak of 15 things to do in Bangkok (a city) with so much population is to stay very short. If nine million people live and / or are distracted by fifteen things, little tails would be put together.

Bangkok is a bridge city, and we could almost say that it is the entrance city for all of Southeast Asia. As such, its level of development is somewhat higher than surrounding country capitals and as they like to tell its inhabitants, Bangkok is a city that never sleeps, a city that never rests.

It is difficult to say everything there is to do in Bangkok or the best you can do a city so big and so many where there are so many attractions and / or activities, but among many things I would like to highlight these fifteen:

15 things to do in Bangkok

  1. Visit the Royal Palace

After a visit to Bangkok and missing to see the great Royal Palace will be like going to Paris and passing the Eiffel Tower. It is an essential visit to be in the city and as everyone knows and unfortunately you are not the only one who will know, you can prepare for queues and to see people everywhere. Yes, it’s like that, but it’s worth it, I assure you.

Built in 1782 in a complex of more than 20 hectares on the banks of the Chao Phraya is like a small city formed by several buildings that have been built throughout its history. It has been the home for a long time of the Thai royal family that leaves more than one open-mouthed for its beauty, its ornaments and its typical roofs in the shape of a point.

One of its main attractions is the Emerald Buddha, the most famous Buddha in Thailand, a Buddha carved in Jade that we find inside the Wat Phra Kaew.

  1. Visit their temples

Thailand is known for the large number of temples built throughout the country, but only in Bangkok can we find more than 400.

How? 400? Yes, but beware, I’m not going to tell you to visit them all, but there are some essentials.

One of them we have already named, is the famous Wat Phra Kaew, inside the royal palace and its famous Emerald Buddha, which, although it is the most important in the country, does not detract from other temples like Wat Po or the temple of the Buddha. .

Other of no less importance is the Wat Traimit or Temple of the Golden Buddha, the Wat Benchambophit, also known as the Temple of Marble.

Another jewel is the Wat Arun, the temple of dawn, from which you have a spectacular view of Bangkok.

  1. Visit a floating market

I have no doubt that more than once you have seen a photo of the floating market where there are many small rafts full of fruit, vegetables or flowers, going from top to bottom and offering everything to tourists who walk there. Well, possibly that photo is from Bangkok.

The markets of Amphawa and Damnoen Saduak, are about an hour from Bangkok and renting a boat to take you through the channels can cost you a few euros according to your bargaining skills and the number of people.

  1. Fling with the backpacking atmosphere of Khao San Road

Lights, noise, backpacker atmosphere, bars, massage centers, travelers everywhere and hostels. Khao San Road, in the district of Rattanakosin, is the quintessential backpacker neighborhood where you can meet people and make a little pineapple with other travelers like you … There is nightlife every night until the wee hours. In their bars they offer all kinds of cocktails, beers and even cubes of alcohol. And if you’re interested in starting to bargain, you’re also in a good place since the street has many shops where you can buy clothes and souvenirs.

Small cars in the form of a small kitchen are also available, offering rice, padthai or spring rolls at very low prices.

It is the best place to find cheap accommodation and is also in a very favorable area to visit the Grand Palace and several of the most important temples in the city.

  1. Have a bath in Chattuchak

Made up of more than twenty alleys and thousands of stalls, the Chattuchak market is the biggest market in Bangkok that only opens its doors on weekends.

It is said that this market is visited by more than 200,000 people every day and although the most relevant is all kinds of textiles (most fakes of more or less quality) you can find any rarity in any of their positions.

The prices are somewhat cheaper than in the center of the city but even so the bargaining is the order of the day to get even a better price.

  1. Go to a Muay Thai match

If you do not like contact sports, I do not recommend it. The Muay Thai is the national sport and, of course, has its origins in Thailand.

A night of show in a club or exhibition center is the best option to visualize this type of fight.

Not only is the fight seen but also the environment that surrounds it, where the most daring bet among them and you can see how the tickets move from hand to hand, just like in the movies.

  1. Enjoy the food

One of the best things to do in Bangkok is to try their food. Thais eat at all hours and usually on the street or outside the house, and the saying goes “Wherever you go, do what you see”, what comes to say in this case: eat on the street.

Thailand is full of street stalls all over its corners and in all its corners. There are houses or apartments that even lack a kitchen. The Thai culture sends you to the street to eat and not because it is street food it has to be bad. I have eaten soups, rice and exquisite noodles in the street for only one euro.

There are also small restaurants where you can eat very well for a few baths.

Do not forget to buy fruits, small juices or smoothies. In many positions they make juices in front of you so you can see that they are natural and / or use bottled water.

  1. Give yourself a good massage

Who does not like a good massage? I like them and in Thailand I had the opportunity to give myself two.

One of them was in a massage school at the exit of Wat Po and another one in Silom. A marvel.

If you are in Thailand you have the opportunity to get good massages at a great price. You should take advantage of it and enjoy it. Let them crack and contort you a bit for a good set-up to keep walking and enjoying your trip.

  1. Navigate the Chao Phraya

The Chao Phraya is the main river in the country that descends from the mountainous regions of the north to the Gulf of Thailand.

There are large boats that take you through Chao Phraya, which offer you table, dinner and music. If you want to indulge yourself, go ahead, I’m sure you’ll enjoy it, but if you travel on a budget, do not worry, you can cross the Chao Phraya and navigate its Klongs for a few baths with less comfort.

In addition, many local people use the taxi-boats to move from one place to another as it communicates several areas of the city with which you may have the opportunity to travel from one place to another.

  1. Bargain

Learn to bargain. All day and for everything you have to have your bargaining skills ready for attack and defense. In Bangkok, bargaining is part of everyday life. Bargaining on the means of transport, at lunchtime and when buying. You also, as a tourist, you are fresh meat to abuse with the prices but if you know how to use your weapons well you will get that the Thais do not win so heavily the haggling game.

Mind you, keep in mind that they have already won in advance. Always win, assume it, but maybe you will not take advantage of you so much. Another very important thing is to smile, smile during “the game”, it helps a lot.

  1. Experience going in Tuk Tuk

It is not suitable for those who are delicate of heart. Obviously it’s irony, but get ready for a rally through the chaos of the streets of Bangkok. You have to experience the incredible dexterity of the drivers of these small motorcycles. They are not afraid to get between car and car, to go side by side on the road in order to get to the destination as soon as possible and be able to hook a new customer. There is no gap where the tuk tuk cannot get into full speed.

Personally I love the experience, but it’s not something I’ve done very often, especially in Bangkok where drivers are increasingly abusing prices by being aware that they have become an attraction for tourists, but that’s true. , you have to do it. You have to ride in them yes or yes.

  1. Relax in one of their parks

The first impression of Bangkok is that of a totally chaotic city immersed in a cloud of pollution, pollution and noise, with congested traffic and people everywhere from one place to another. So it is impossible to imagine that we can find a secluded place to rest from the stress of the city, away from the noise, a green area to spend a few hours of disconnection reading a book or doing a bit of jogging.

Well, those areas exist. Bangkok has several parks where you can get away from all that. I’m talking about parks like Limphini or Bensajiri.

  1. Stroll through Chinatown

Almost all the major cities in the world have their particular Chinatown and Bangkok could not be less. Massified streets full of stalls of food, clothing, jewelry or stalls that do everything and more.

One thing that I call a lot to the attention is the smell of incense that comes from everywhere. It is as if there was a huge incense in the middle of the street. And I would also like to highlight some wooden stalls that looked like old houses that had been converted into shops.

Chinatown and its environment is undoubtedly something that should not be missed.

  1. Escape a day to Ayutthaya

Ayutthaya is the capital of the ancient kingdom of Siam destroyed by the Burmese army and whose ruins were proclaimed a World Heritage Site by Unesco in 1991.

It is just under 100km from Bangkok and it is an almost obligatory visit. Visiting its ruins is one of the things that every traveler should do in Thailand, more for its history than for its beauty. The temples of Wat Mahathat, Wat Na Phramen or Wat Phra Sri Samphet stand out.

  1. Approach the famous bridge over the Kwai River

Another easy excursion from Bangkok is to leave in the direction of Kanchanabury to visit the city and see the famous bridge over the river Kwai.

The original was two kilometers further north and was destroyed on November 28, 1944 by the allies in the Second World War. It was built by Allied soldiers, many of them losing their lives in it due to fatigue, hunger or illness.

Bangkok is a fascinating city in a fascinating country suitable for all those travelers eager to discover a new experience far from Europe, whether they are independent travelers or not, with family or without family. Bangkok welcomes the tourists with open arms, so what are you waiting for? Visiting this magnificent city isn’t difficult as there are many cheap flights to Bangkok from any origin.

It is one of the easiest countries to travel because of its security, its connections, its people … It is possibly the ideal place to make your trip a unique personal experience where you do not need anyone but yourself to explore it even if never before You have traveled alone or alone. It would define Thailand as the ideal country for a solo experience. You dare?
