Why Australian Resident Return Visa?
By virtue of being an Australian citizen, you have the right of entry to and exit out of Australia. But, if you are a non-citizen of Australia, you need a visa to get entry into Australia. Stipulation of Subclasses
If you have resided in Australia for at least for two years out of the five years as citizen or resident of Australia, you are entitled to be granted RRV under the subclass 155. For this, you should have specific ties for Australia; such as business, employment, personal or cultural.
If you have legitimately lived even for one day in the past 5 years or have lived less than two years in the immediately past five years in Australia, you will be entitled to get RRV under the subclass 157. You can also get RRV under 157 if you have been staying outside, getting Australian Citizenship for three months. You must exhibit the compelling reason that made you to stay out of the country.
For lodging your application for RRV, you must have been
- An permanent resident of Australia
- An erstwhile PR and your last PR visa has not been cancelled or
- An erstwhile citizen of Australia and have lost or resigned your citizenship. Such situation may arise if you became a national of another country
Validity of RRV
RRV under subclass 155 is valid for 5 years if you meet the residence requirement of two years and hold the above mentioned ties for Australia. If those are not your circumstances and you have compelling need to travel internationally, you can get RRV under subclass 157 that will be valid for only 3 months. One such circumstance may be, you are required to see a severely ailing member of your family residing in Australia. Even if your passport expires, you RRV are still valid.
Mode and Application
You can apply online or by postal mail by filling the Form 1085. You need the following documents to evidence of
- Your identity for which you can submit certified copies of Passport page that contains your identity.
- Your status of Immigration showing your present or former PR visa or
- Your ties with Australia related to your businesses, personal, employment or cultural related
The Department of Home Affairs (DHA) will process your RRV within one business day if you have the status of PR and have lodged your application from inside Australia. However, if you apply from outside Australia, it will be about 2 weeks.
In case you are a former PR, the processing times will be between 6 to 9 months, if applied from inside Australia and 9 to 12 months if you apply from outside Australia.
They must apply separately and pay the required application charges. For online application, it is $360 and $80 if applied through postal mail.
You are not required to get a RRV if you are having the following documents with your passport
- The documents have not been cancelled
- You have not got the status of Australian citizen
- You have turned back to Australia with an interval of time three years of each departure
New Processing Times Updated by DIBP
The DIBP updates the Resident visa processing time on monthly basis, indicating the time frame of 75% or 90% of applications lodged globally. You need to regularly view the website of DIBP to know the current status of you visa application.
